HOW TO DIAGNOSE POWER RAILS FAULTS

📏 Normal Impedance Ranges (Measured in Ohms)

When checking rails with a multimeter in resistance mode (board unpowered):

⚠️ Key Diagnostic Notes

  • Low resistance (<1 Ω) on CPU/GPU rails is normal for modern processors due to high transistor density. Don’t mistake this for a short unless it’s near 0 Ω.
  • Compare with known-good boards: impedance varies slightly by design and manufacturer.
  • Always measure in diode mode for confirmation: typical forward bias readings for CPU/GPU rails are 0.2–0.4 V.
  • Abnormal signs: sudden drop to near 0 Ω on standby rails (+3VALW, +5VALW) usually indicates a shorted capacitor or MOSFET.
